Why Join OSCO?
By Fraser Petley

With the push on to increase our membership, I’d like to talk about “why” you should be part of OSCO. For starters, over the past thirty years, OSCO has become one of the most stable and reputable community organizations in the city. This allows us the opportunity to weigh in on matters that affect Old South such as traffic, infilling and assorted other environmental issues.

Although on occasion the city has requested it, more times than not, community input is not a factor in important decisions that affect us all. Some recent examples over the past year have been the Martha Bishop bequest to Landon Library, the proposed road through Greenway Park and the attempted widening of Emery Street. In each case, OSCO was vigilant and brought a strong community response to the table.

Although we’ve fought the good fight when we’ve had to over the years, I don’t want to give the impression that OSCO is all about civic politics because it’s not.

The bottom line is that OSCO is deeply committed to the betterment of life in Old South. As proof, I point to everything from the Gathering on the Green, Cruise Night and the numerous bike rings and park benches we’ve bought and installed to the countless trees that we’ve planted over the years.

So a strong OSCO is good for all of us and that’s why we need you to get involved. Whether it’s as an active member on the Board or subcommittee level or just to show your support for the good work that OSCO does in the community, I urge you to take part.

Membership in OSCO is a mere $10.00 per household. You can print, fill out and mail back our membership form now. Or, if you’d like to see what we’re all about, come out to our regular meeting on the second Tuesday of the month from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Landon Library, 167 Wortley Road.
